I am going to buy a compressor today. I intend to use it for painting and air tools. Any advice?

Air tools demand a stable 130PSI or above, typical. Painting requires much, much lower PSI. So you’re going to want to have a very good adjustable regulator. If you’re doing airbrushing, I strongly recommend two separate compressors instead. (Airbrush does fine with those dinky little quarter horsepower ones.)

For painting yo want a big reserve tank, at least 10 gallons

More CFMs, more better.

Biggest one you can afford/fit . It’s frustrating to have to wait for the compressor to refill when you only have one more nut to remove.
I have gotten away from air tools and have moved into cordless tools, personally. Milwaukee makes some amazing tools with the same capabilities as air tools without the hassle of hoses. I have a 3/8" impact that works every bit as well as my air powered impact powered by a 26 gallon compressor.

My advice is to get a good one that works.
Don’t get one that is broken and/or doesn’t work.

get the most SCFM’s as you can possibly get, especially if painting and running air tools.

Painting is all about CFM instead of pressure. I seem to remember looking for something in the 8-9 CFM range when I was looking to get a setup for painting. That’s actually going to dictate much of your purchase as you typically need to get in to the two stage compressors to get enough CFMs to properly do painting. But once you have that covered, the air tools will be fine as well. If you want to sandblast, that sucks a ton of air as well.
But as has been said by others, buy as big as you can afford and fit in your house. Oh, and properly power. Got to make sure you can provide the right power whether it be 220 or 110 and high enough amperage.
My compressor needs more than 15 amps 110 to operate. My old house had it, the new one does not. Looks like one more item to add to the To-Do list.
